MY STORY

Although I come from a family of teachers, I knew from the age of 10 that I wanted to be a medical doctor. As a grade 4 pupil, I was one of the first to sign up for the first aid group at my primary school under the supervision of Mrs van Rooyen at Lochnerhof, in Strand. I pursued my studies at the University of Stellenbosch and obtained my primary medical degree in 1994.

During my internship in 1995 at Helderberg Hospital, I was naturally drawn to the obstetric ward and had to do a breech vaginal delivery on the third afternoon of my internship! As a Senior House Officer in England, I worked at two different maternity hospitals for a period of time in 1996.

On my return to South Africa, I worked for two years at Helderberg Hospital, had two baby girls 4 years apart, and worked in private practice as a general practitioner up to 2003.

My postgraduate training was done at Tygerberg Hospital and I received my degree with distinction in 2006. This was followed by 2 years of training in Gynaecological Oncology under the mentorship of Professor Hennie Botha at Tygerberg Hospital. The subspecialty certificate in gynaecological oncology was obtained from the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2009.
