I was invited by my daughters to go to a drag show in Cape Town. I did not know what to expect at all. It was a great interactive and informal performance with dancing and singing. The crowd had a bit of everything – old and young/ straight and gay/ married and single. The host/ess addressed us as ladies and gentlemen and everyone in between… In this modern age, we are bombarded by gender pronouns like he/him she/ her he/ they etc as well as focus on the voice of the LGBTQ community. After I let my thoughts go about the evening, it dawned on me – no matter what my viewpoints are on sexuality/religion or what I perceive to be ‘normal’, ‘acceptable’, ‘the norm’ – true freedom to accept and to be my true self only comes with full acceptance of and respect for others. Everyone’s journey is different in life and the only way to even try and understand someone else is to try to step into their shoes and look at matters/situations from their perspective and stop yourself if you find yourself stereotyping or judging others.
